Initiating A Difficult Conversation

December 23, 2020
By: Dr. Jodie Richardson, Clinical Psychologist

Psychologist Jodie Richardson, PhD on initiating a difficult conversation with a loved one 💕💬

Concerned about the mental health of a loved one? Here’s how to express your concern and support  :

Use of I statements : “I’ve been concerned because…”

State observable facts :“I’ve noticed you have lost a lot of weight…”

Suggest your loved one might not want to be alone with this anymore : “Perhaps you need some help with this”

Allow space : “I can see you need space, let’s come back to the conversation in a few days.”
