Dr. Maryann Joseph is is a clinical psychologist and Connecte collaborator living in Ottawa, Ontario. She received her PhD in Clinical Psychology at McGill University in 2012 and is a member of member of the Order of Psychologists of Quebec. Maryann examined mind-body relationships in her health psychology doctoral research in the Montreal Behavioural Medicine Centre at Sacré Coeur Hosptial. Passionate about psychology since 1996, she worked in community mental health promotion through Youth Net/Réseau Ado at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. Since then she has worked in various clinical settings, including Change Cognitive Behavioural Psychology Clinic, La Cité Medicale Montreal, several specialized oncology units and the palliative care unit at the Montreal Jewish General Hospital, and the Alan Edwards Pain Management Unit at the Montreal General Hospital.
Her clinical approach is warm, creative, compassionate, and tailored to each client. As appropriate, she incorporates elements of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Motivational Interviewing, and Compassion-Focused Therapy. She specializes in the treatment of adults who are seeking help for grief after a death or break-up, mood disorders (e.g., depression), anxiety disorders (e.g., panic, constant worries, or specific phobias), binge eating and body image issues, chronic health conditions, chronic pain, end-of-life issues, and coping/adjustment issues. Inspired by the way compassion trumps shame and self-criticism, she has been developing a self-compassion-based group therapy approach for women’s body image issues.
When possible, she loves being around trees, practising Qi Gong, making art, getting absorbed in a good story, and song-writing. She is curious about the human experience and is fascinated by existential issues, gratitude, empathy, creative expression, intuition, and healing processes.
